As an artist I strongly believe that mastering any medium demands students to build strong fundamental knowledge first because this foundation leads to personal development and creative innovation. The essential capabilities artists develop through basic visual art and design education enable them to excel in all creative subjects. A full comprehension of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design alongside observational drawing and material knowledge becomes essential before artists can push creative boundaries. The knowledge I gained from my artistic practice spanning traditional ceramics to modern mixed-media sculpture continues to grow as I guide students while they explore multiple artistic concepts.
To help emerging artists develop their skills I use my training experience which combines technical aspects with conceptual knowledge. The combination of individual strengths and weaknesses each artist owns serves as their foundation for growth because they must learn to utilize them properly. The development of healthy artistic practices stands as my teaching priority because the creative path extends over an entire lifetime rather than being a competition. Artistic success happens when artists define personal achievements independently from outside expectations. Artistic practices have unlimited pathways for self-expression that welcomes all people.
My educational foundation depends on two essential components which are consistency and open communication. Through my leadership I show students how to care for each person while understanding their individual human journey. My approach of discarding personal ego helps me break down conventional hierarchies. This approach allows students to feel comfortable in creative and academic expression while building open dialogue that facilitates rapid community development. Through transparent communication I can identify the inner qualities and personal attributes which reside in every student. My educational goal involves maintaining sensitivity to both verbal expression and academic demands so I can “meet” students at their level. I actively work to understand their world view and the context of the environment, or rather, the day-to-day life students experience during the semester. I prioritize listening and validate student experiences because their viewpoints differ from mine. If I identify any underlying challenges they are experiencing, I help guide them to the appropriate University resources so they can find the necessary supports.
I endorse modern research practices together with an evolving art historical context which students actively participate in. Each student holds distinct creative insights and qualities which I work to discover. I use these three basic yet meaningful inquiries to establish student confidence: "What are you attempting to create?", "How are you approaching what you are creating?", and "Why are you creating it?". The same inquiries help me navigate my own artistic challenges when exploring unknown territory. The search for purpose through "why" leads students to discover their "what" and "how" in creative processes thus making projects based on personal experiences. I emphasize to students that sharing personal thoughts and emotions with the world requires significant bravery. The process of idea generation creates stability which leads to confidence in their work thus enabling students to develop unique voices that combine clear forms with balanced color arrangements and strong spatial perception.
I read course evaluations carefully.  I focus on listening to students' concerns rather than focusing on my own perspectives. My aim is to always gain insight, through all interactions, on how to best meet students’ needs while balancing the objects of coursework goals. My core instructional principle focuses on teaching students effective working approaches while fostering their unique voices. Guiding students toward successful working methods is a central tenet of my teaching. My own education in a traditional craft environment instilled in me the invaluable lesson of first learning the rules in order to effectively break them. I want my students to develop a traditional understanding of their primary mediums and the predecessors who shaped them. It is upon this solid foundation that they can confidently stretch the rules and expand into new and innovative artistic avenues. Ultimately, passion is the driving force behind creation and the unifying energy within any classroom.
